Our historic youth hostels

Historic youth hostels

In the course of its more than 90 years of history, Swiss Youth Hostels has acquired a wealth of incomparable historic structures. Since the association was founded in 1924, it has based its hostels in a wide variety of historic buildings. Today, you can find hostels in forts, castles, former factory buildings, historic villas and chalets, sanatoriums, a tollhouse on Roman foundations, and in other important examples of historic and contemporary architecture.

The significance of these historic buildings is firmly rooted in the philosophy of the Swiss Youth Hostels association and the Swiss Foundation for Social Tourism. Many of the buildings are heritage-protected and have been converted in close cooperation with heritage-preservation offices.
