Historic Youth Hostel Zurich
The ceremony for the “Historic Hotel of the Year 2008” award was held in the prize-winning Hotel Schatzalp in Davos. The Zurich Youth Hostel and the Swiss Youth Hostels Association received the special 2008 award "for a thoughtful and successful conversion of a 1960s building and an outstanding business philosophy in the area of social tourism".
The Zurich Youth Hostel was built between 1962 and 1965. An old school building had been available to the Youth Hostels Association as a hostel since as long ago as 1936. The renowned architect Ernst Gisel created a building in which the various functions (dining, day rooms, sleeping) were clearly allocated to individual building blocks. During the comprehensive renovation in 2003/04, it was possible to retain the atmosphere and original form. Since 1998, the youth hostel has been listed among the buildings worthy of protection in the city of Zurich.
